Virginia Highways near DC
These are the major roads in the Washington DC area. The Potomac River divides Virginia (to the south) and Maryland (to the north).
I-95 comes from Richmond Virginia in the South to the Washington DC beltway. It is the most crowded of the highways as it is used by East Coast travelers.
I-66 is the primary highway from the Shenandoah Mountains and through western Fairfax County to the beltway.
Route 267 is the Dulles Toll Road, which is the popular connection to Reston, Herndon in Fairfax County and fast growing Loudoun County. The Metrorail is in the center of the Toll Road. Completion on that Silver Line Metrorail was completed in 2015. Completion to Dulles Airport and one exit beyond in Ashburn is expected in 2020.
Route 7 extends to Leesburg, VA.
The Fairfax County Parkway, Route 7100, is also sometimes called the outer beltway. Route 28 is a bit farther west and crosses north to south.
